I grew up on a 300,000 acre cattle ranch in Namibia. We had lots of cattle, wildlife, and wild horses. I learned to start horses at a fairly young age. I also started shoeing horses at age 16, and did a lot of competitive endurance riding. I went to a technical high school where I got training as a machinist. After graduating, I came to the U.S. where I got formal training as a farrier. After completing horseshoeing school, I apprenticed off and on with Vernon Purdy as a farrier. I then became the personal and resident farrier for Pat Parelli, for two years. It was during that time I learned and refined my skills at colt starting. I went back to Africa and put all my new knowledge to practice on extremely wild horses, with great success.
I later returned to America in order to continue learning. I have completed a first level course at the Acadamy of Equine Dentistry in Idaho. And I have also studied equine bodywork with Dino Frettard in California. Master saddlemaker Andy Knight from B.C. taught me the skills for making saddle trees. I also became interested in riding and training
performance horses. I have ridden and trained with Peggy Cummings,
Leon Harrel and Les Vogt, all of whom have taught me a lot.
